Jessie J at the Brit’s

Now I am by no means a fan of Jessie J, quite the opposite in fact, but I cannot deny that she looked amazing at the Brit Awards last wee. It shouldn’t have worked, red see through lace dress, big hair, piles of make up, and yet somehow it did! I guess she has the attitude to pull it off. So I thought I’d do a version of her make up and share it with you guys because all the other stuff aside(crazy hair and outfit) it’s a really pretty smokey eye.

Hope you enjoy!

Modern Pin Up Makeup inspired by Gwen Stefani – A Wearable Marilyn Monroe

I can’t believe I haven’t done this look yet, Gwen Stefani has been a bit of a style hero of mine since I was about 12! Tragic Kingdom was the first album I ever bought and still features in my top 10 of all time.

So this look is more about her more recent makeup look, it’s still her classic signature look but just a little bit softer and toned down, so it’s a lot easier to wear. This is a great look to try if you love the pin up style but are scared of wearing such strong makeup.

This is the image I was working from

And my version, before and after

And I applied some photoshop magic to give myself brown eyes, so you can see how this makeup looks quite different on someone with darker eyes, I personally think darker eyes help to balance the very defined brow and strong. Granted it’s not the best photoshopping in the world but I tried!

Vintage Makeup, the trend continues..

So myself and the fella went to see “The Artist” last night (fantastic film by the way), and I began thinking about the  spate of 30′s and 40′s themed movies that have been released recently. There’s “My week with Marilyn”, “The Artist”, and “The Great Gatsby” is being filmed right here in Sydney at the moment and I think it’s only natural that this trend in movie-making is going to follow in fashion and makeup. So I thought I’d give you all a heads up and show you some of the video’s I have come across that will help you to recreate these beautiful looks yourself.

First, I found some images of actress’s from that era, so you can see the genuine article. It’s a look that has been copied by many cosmetic companies recently, Illamasqua to name one, and I can understand why. It’s a very sexy, yet demure, mysterious and just plain beautiful look that I think you will agree has stood the test of time.

And some examples of the modern versions

I recently came across this girl on Youtube, and I think she’s is only starting out as a guru but I love her tutorials so far. She does hair tutorials and she explains everything so clearly and makes everything easy to understand, I highly recommend you check her out! Here she is showing how to get classic finger waves using the traditional method used in the 30′s, I love this video.

And I don’t think we could talk about 30′s makeup without mentioning Pixiwoo and the fantastic tutorials Samantha has created.

Will you be trying this look out?

Happy Valentines Day! Here’s a soft and pretty makeup tutorial to celebrate!

Happy Valentines to you all! And yes I know its just a made up holiday to make us all go out and buy romantic crap for our other halves, but I woke up to a chocolate rose, a lovely card (and some other stuff that I won’t go into too much detail about, lets keep it pg..) so I am in the truly in the spirit of the day!

I think anything that makes you show your love for your other half has got to be a good thing right? (Especially when you are on the receiving end!)

So to celebrate the day here is my soft, natural, romantic, pretty makeup tutorial, perfect for your hot date tonight! Or any other date for that matter, it’s really wearable and very easy to achieve. I hope you enjoy!

Lana Del Rey Makeup Tutorial – Taken from the cover of Interview Magazine

Unfortunately I think there are a few people in the world that look less like Lana Del Rey than me, but hey, I thought I’d give it a go. I came across this image while searching for her music and thought it was such a striking makeup look that I had to try it myself and show you guys the results!

Now the part I hate, where you get to compare my mug with that of the gorgeous Lana, be kind people, be kind! Aside from the fact that I look absolutely nothing like her, you can clearly see that we have very different skin tones, so obviously that is going to affect how the makeup looks in a big way. But regardless, this was my interpretation and I hope you like it.

My adventures backstage at a fashion show!

During the week I was lucky enough to do the makeup, along with a few other makeup artists, for a fashion show with Romantic Rocks, a California based design house.  It was so much fun! The theme of the show was  pin up with a little bit of Kitsch thrown in,so it was right up my alley. Luckily enough we were able to prepare the models in the Australasian Beauty College, so we had plenty of space to move about, fantastic lighting and loads of mirrors, it made life so much easier.

I ended up doing three models, and I have to say, it was some of my best work, I am so happy with how it turned out. The hair was incredible too, so when everything came together the finished look was fantastic.

I will upload all of the photo’s  I took to my fashion gallery (it’s easier to upload large amounts of photo’s that way) and you can check that out here.

Once we had everyone prepped in the Beauty College myself and another makeup artist hopped in a cab and headed over to the venue , Candy’s Apartment in Kings Cross. We just had to stay around for last minute touch ups before the models went on, and it was a little bit more hectic there that over in the College.

The products I used on the models were

MAC Prep and Prime Skin Base
MAC Studio Fix Fluid
MAC Prolongwear Concealer
MAC Mineralize Skinfinish for powder and contour
MAC Mineralize Skinfinish  Porcelain Pink
MAC Blush Well Dressed
MAC Paint Pot Soft Ochre
MAC Eyeshadow Mylar, Omega, Handwritten
MAC Fluidline Blacktrack
MAC Haute and Naughty Mascara
MAC Cherry Lipliner
MAC Russian Red Lipstick

The Only Makeup Brushes You Need – Lets start with face

I feel like there are a million and one video’s and blog posts out there trying to convince you that you need to own a whole pile of make-up brushes, when really, you only need a couple. Now, let me start off by saying I am a complete addict and I can’t get enough of them, I will never have enough make-up brushes! However, I realise that’s crazy and not everybody has an obsession like me. So hopefully this post will help the not so crazy of you make the right choices when purchasing expensive brushes.

As I explain in the video I have gone through my own personal favourite brushes, but really what you should take away is what type of brush to buy, for example a flat dense synthetic haired foundation brush, as opposed wanting to get a MAC 190.

I will be following this post up with a video about eye brushes so keep an eye out for that and if you haven’t done so already head over to my youtube channel here and subscribe so you don’t miss any future videos.

How to Create the Perfect Eye shadow Palette

Going to a makeup counter to construct an eyeshadow palette can, for some people, be a very daunting experience. Personally I get a little dizzy with excitement and run around the counter like a kid in a candy store.
The likes of MAC or Inglot have such a vast selection of colours it can be very difficult to choose the best colours to suit whatever it is you need them for. If you consider a couple of different things and follow these guidelines then you will find you get a lot more bang for your buck!

In this video I talk about colour, colour temperature and texture.

These are some examples of different colour temperatures, and as I explain in the video, this is a really important thing to understand. (Both palettes are MAC)

A Warm Brown Palette

A Cool Brown Palette

As you can see both palettes are brown, but because of the difference in colour temperature they look totally different from each other. I would always recommend to try and put colours with the same temperature together in a palette. That way no matter what combination of those eye shadows you use they will always go together blend really easily. And I just want to say that these tips are possibly best for people that are just starting out in make-up, or maybe aren’t that confident in choosing or applying colour. If you are a complete pro then go ahead and buy whatever you like because you will more than likely be able to make it work.
